Quick Take: Pukchang Military Airfield Modernization Progresses

Commercial satellite imagery indicates modernization efforts at North Korea’s Pukchang Military Airfield continue to take shape.

Work to pave the runway extension is ongoing. Efforts to extend the main runway by 300 meters began in November 2023 and, as previously reported, will bring the runway to span 2,800 meters when complete, equivalent to what exists at the renovated Sunchon Military Airfield.

Alongside the expansion, what appear to be footers for aircraft shelters—likely similar to those at the Sunchon and Wonsan-Kalma airfields—are observed.

A new building has also been constructed in between the two sections of shelter footers. The round center and tower-like structure suggest it could be an air traffic control building.

Toward the south end of the runway, work is being done to further extend the new taxiway closer to the aircraft dispersals.
