John Carlson

John Carlson is an international authority on nuclear non-proliferation, disarmament and arms control, safeguards and verification, nuclear security and nuclear governance. He retired from the Australian Government Service in 2010 after 46 years including 21 years as Director General of the Australian Safeguards and Non-Proliferation Office (1989-2010). In this position he served, inter alia, as Alternate Governor for Australia on the IAEA Board of Governors and chair of the IAEA’s Standing Advisory Group on Safeguards Implementation (2001-2006).

Carlson is now an independent consultant. His current affiliations include: the Asia-Pacific Leadership Network on Nuclear Non-proliferation and Disarmament; the International Luxembourg Forum; Non-resident Senior Fellow, Vienna Center for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation; and Counselor to the Nuclear Threat Initiative.

John is a Fellow of the Institute of Nuclear Materials Management, and a Member of the Order of Australia.
