In his new memoir, “Witness to North Korea,” Jerome Sauvage provides a first-hand account of what it is like to live in North Korea based on his time as a UN Special Resident coordinator in Pyongyang from 2009-2013. Reflecting on his time in the humanitarian aid space, Sauvage recounts his experience working with North Korean citizens and the role’s associated successes and setbacks.

    Jerome Sauvage is an International Affairs Consultant based in the USA and specializing in humanitarian affairs and human resource management. He was previously a UN Resident Coordinator in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.
  • Esther S. Im, Senior Peace and Security Advisor, FP4A
    Esther S. Im is the Senior Peace and Security Advisor at Foreign Policy for America (FP4A), where she leads on policy related to China, Iran, North Korea, and nuclear issues. Previously, she worked at the National Committee on North Korea on promoting principled engagement between the US and North Korea in the areas of nuclear negotiations, Track II diplomacy, and humanitarian engagement.
  • Keith Luse, Executive Director, NCNK (Moderator)
    Keith Luse is the Executive Director of the National Committee on North Korea. Previously, Luse was the Senior East Asia Policy Advisor for Chairman and later Ranking Member Senator Richard G. Lugar at the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee from 2003 until 2013. Luse also served as Staff Director for Mr. Lugar at the Senate Agriculture Committee from 1999 through 2002, where the Senator also served as Chairman and later Ranking Member. While at the Senate Agriculture Committee, Luse made the first of eventually five trips to North Korea.
  • Iliana Ragnone, Research Analyst, 38 North, Stimson Center (Opening Remarks)
    Iliana Ragnone is a Research Analyst for the 38 North Program at the Stimson Center and the Managing Editor of 38North.org. Her research interests include the US-ROK alliance, North Korea’s WMD development, and broader Indo-Pacific security dynamics. She also plays an integral role in 38 North’s satellite imagery work.
